High flyer Lin, took her first steps back into employment and ended up working for herself!
Lin Business Owner
Could you please tell me little about your work background?
I had been working full time for an airline in the Middle East, it was a big juggle between work and family, but I enjoyed the work. I was developing my career and progressing well. The work benefits were amazing! I relocated back to UK and took time off to resettle my family. Time flew quickly and I felt it was time to get back to work. A friend who had attended a course before, recommended Successful Mums to me, it sounded like just what I needed and knew that I could benefit from the programme.
How long had you been away from work when you attended the Successful Mums course?
It had been about three years since I had worked. The break meant I had lost touch with the work place and needed to reconnect and learn some new skills. I volunteered and decided to sign up for the Successful Mums Back to Work Course.
What did you feel were the biggest challenges for you, returning to work after time away?
There was a culture shock when we relocated. People handle things differently, in the UK, gaps in your CV are frequently questioned and being a mum is not everyone’s cup of tea! So meeting women in similar situations and sharing experience was very empowering for me. I loved the concept of the invisible crown that Successful Mums use, it’s an amazing way to regain your confidence.
What were the main things you took away from the course?
The course provided fantastic career advice, confidence techniques and gave some great work-life balance tips about returning to work. It was great to find out what employers look for on your CV. The review of Employment Law was really interesting and gave us pointers on how to deal with challenges we may be faced with. Before this course, I never realised the skills I use as a mum could be so transferable in the workplace!
What was the most useful tip?
You are NOT JUST a mum and ALWAYS wear your invisible crown!
What did you find most valuable about the 1 to 1 coaching?
The encouragement from the Successful Mums Career Coach, Shara was always amazing. She talked openly about the challenges I was facing and we discussed the goals I’d set and planned how to achieve them.
I realised there is power in women together! We held each other’s hands and helped each other in thoughts and ideas.
I would like to thank everyone at Successful Mums who has made it possible for us not to be JUST mums, but successful ones. I’ve since decided to start my own business and just completed the fantastic Business Start-up Course, so I’ve actually found a job working for myself!
