Jane Knight’s Monthly Column – June 2018
Share your experiences for our Returner Survey this June
Successful Mums needs you! Today we’re launching a new piece of research that aims to help employers offer more support to mums returning to work – and we need your help to make it as effective and relevant as possible.
For our Returner Survey, we’ve joined forces with OneFile co-founder Susanna Lawson to look at how employers can help ease the transition back to work for women after maternity leave. Susanna has become a great friend and supporter of Successful Mums since giving a brilliant, insightful talk at one of our Tasters earlier this year.
As working mums ourselves, both Susanna and I are passionate about helping women overcome the challenges they face returning to work after having children. And as employers and businesswomen, we also know that employers who do not support and retain their “women returners” have an awful lot to lose.
We hope the Returner Survey will help us give businesses more information about the practical steps they can take to ensure returning mums can participate in the workforce as fully as they wish – and, as a result, keep the valuable skills, experience and potential of these women within their organisations for longer.
The survey is aimed at women who returned to their existing employer after maternity or adoption leave and focuses on the support they received on going back to work. We’re collecting data on the offer and uptake of initiatives ranging from Keeping In Touch (KIT) days and gradual return to work, to flexible working and refresher training. As well as asking mums to identify the most helpful things their employer did or could have done to support their return to work, we also want to know about their job satisfaction and engagement before and after maternity leave.
To ensure our results are robust, we need as many respondents as possible – and this is where you come in! We know our Successful Mums community is incredibly supportive and engaged and we would love you to get involved by completing the survey (if it applies to you) and sharing it with friends and contacts. You can access the survey here from today; we’ll also be emailing out a link to our subscribers and sharing it on our social media platforms, so please ‘like’, re-tweet, re-post and comment away!
I’m really looking forward to sharing our findings with you over the coming months. Once we’ve pinpointed the actions with the best outcomes for women’s experiences of returning to work, we’ll be exploring how we can feed this information back to our fantastic network of employers and beyond.
One of things we hope to do is identify any training needs that exist among employers (for example, around cultural changes or designing flexibility into jobs) and to create and deliver this training in the future. With your participation, I think we have the chance to make a real and lasting difference!
So please get involved this June and help us a make a positive change to women’s lives. Here is the survey once more.
