Designer secrets for success
Guest speaker Suzanne started her luxury design business, Furnishing Interiors, when her children were still at school and had plenty of fantastic advice for the budding businesswomen in our audience.
In a fascinating and honest talk, Suzanne reflected on the highs and the lows of her journey, recalling the excitement of taking on her first member of staff and the exhaustion of working around the clock in the early days, and revealed the lessons she’s learnt along the way.
The designer’s top tips for business success included being passionate about what you do and sticking to your beliefs, the benefits of getting out of your comfort zone and the importance of networking.
Suzanne also stressed the value of always dreaming big, telling the audience: “Aim higher than you first think! Take your BHAG – your Big Hairy Audacious Goal – and start your journey in bite-sized chunks to achieve it. The worst that could happen is that you don’t quite reach it … but you will more likely get further than you first thought.”
But her business insights and inspiring story are not the only reasons we loved hearing from Suzanne. As an employer, she is also passionate about supporting women back into work, is a great believer in flexible working and has recently taken on not one but two Successful Mums! “I find that mums are hard working, can be counted on to get stuff done, add so much value and are very committed to the work they do. But they tend to not value themselves enough and lack confidence, especially if they haven’t worked for a few years,” she said.
By working for an understanding employer, you will be appreciated and your confidence will grow. By working for yourself, you can be your own boss, set your own times and eventually become a flexible employer – Suzanne Elsey
